City of Gulfport Employee Spotlight: Martin Brown

As many of you know, Martin is quick to save the day when it comes to technical support, but did you know that Martin Brown is the assistant coach of the Neon Ninja’s soccer team in Stone County? Did you further know that the Neon Ninja’s won the STATE recreational soccer league championship in May, 2015 capping off a tournament in which the Neon Ninja’s outscored their opponents by 19 – 3!

Martin’s 10 year old son, Ryland Brown is a midfielder on the championship team!
Mayor Billy Hewes and the Gulfport City Council have officially proclaimed Gulfport as “SEABEETOWN, USA”

Established 73 years ago today, the US Navy chose the City of Gulfport as the ideal location for the Advance Base Depot Gulfport to support, train, and equip a new and unique breed of Sailor known as a SEABEE. In 1952 the Advance Base Depot Gulfport became the Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport and 14 years later, NCBC Gulfport significantly expanded and became the homeport for numerous Naval Mobile Construction Battalions as the Nation’s commitments in Southeast Asia escalate.

The patriotic citizens of Gulfport have embraced the Seabees and their families as neighbors and welcomed them into our churches, our schools, our homes, and our hearts. Seabees have become an integral and indivisible part of our community and have provided significant aid to the community in the wake of disasters such as Hurricanes Camille and Katrina. Gulfport also claims the title as the “Home of the Atlantic Seabees” and we are honored that they call Gulfport HOME!
Criterium Racing & Street Festival is coming to the Gulfport Saturday, June 20th!!

High speed turns, a neck and neck down the straightaway and of course the occasional wreck. While this may sound like a NASCAR event, this is a race of the two wheeled variety.
The Tour De Gulfport is a “completely unique event in downtown Gulfport which is actually going to be seven different criterium races.”, sa
id David Parker, Gulfport Economic Developer Director.

A criterium or crit race is a closed circuit race where riders complete multiple laps on city blocks. Promoters say this will be a family event for all ages with a street fair and children’s safety course provided by Memorial Hospital. Anyone who is interested, will get a chance to test their skills on the bike.
If you’re interested in racing, you can call Gulfport Main Street Director Laurie Toups at 228-868-3414. This event costs $15 to register and the event takes place on June 20th.
In celebration of the donated Public Art, Gulfport Main Street Association announced that they will have an Art Walk on Saturday, June 13, starting at 5:00 p.m., that will feature the 7 new sculptures as well as celebrate other art installations throughout downtown Gulfport!

Many of our restaurants and lounges will feature and have on display art, fun music, cool beverages, and children’s activit
ies as well. Fans & brochures, highlighting the “Art Walk” will be provided to include all the information as well as a cool breeze!

The Mississippi Sound Maritime Historical Foundation sponsored the installation of 7 sculptures in Historic Downtown Gulfport. These 7 pieces were selected through a juried process from 38 submissions from 17 artists from around the State, the Southeast and the Northeast and will remain in place for one year. The selected winners are given a stipend to cover expenses in the creation of their pieces and bringing them to the Coast. 2 will be installed on public property and 5 will be installed on private property, 4 in an “Urban Sculpture Garden” setting.

The public will be invited to vote for their favorite sculpture in the show and the artist of the winning sculpture will receive an additional cash prize.
